Looking to the first podium finish since the 2005 edition of the biennial meeting, the Filipinos want to start on the right foot by defeating the Malaysians at the Dai Yen Arena in Kwang Ninh.

Led by SEA Games veteran Alyssa Valdez, the national team hopes that a rigorous training camp highlighted at a stop in Brazil will bear fruit in an attempt to rebound from fourth-place finish three years ago.

Only four teams competed in women's volleyball when the country hosted the 2019 SEA Games, with Thailand winning gold, Vietnam winning silver and Indonesia winning bronze.

The number of women's volleyball teams for the SEA Games has increased to five since Malaysia joined.

Also playing for the Philippines, one of the mentors is Brazilian coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito, along with Jaza Santiago, Abby Marano, Kat Tolentino and Don Macandili.

Game time is 12 noon (Manila time).
