Tour of Asturias 2022 – Routes, profiles, entries, favorites and TV broadcast

Cycling – As the Tour of Italy approaches (May 6 to 29), and in parallel with the Tour of Romandie and the other races taking place this week, from Friday to Sunday with the Tour of Asturias (Vuelta Asturias). This event, ranked 2.1 on the UCI calendar, will take place in Spain. Three stages, all in line, are to be contested on the occasion of this 65th edition with a clearly hilly course, which should especially suit climbers.

In 2021, the final victory went to Nairo Quintana (Team Arkea Samsic), who will not defend his title, absent this year, unlike his team, who made the trip again. Just like Pierre Latour (TotalEnergies) who managed to win a stage during the previous edition and finished third in the final general classification. This event will start and end in the same city, in this case Oviedo. For some, the opportunity to relaunch, to gain confidence or even to initiate a positive dynamic before major deadlines to come.

Able to shine on such a course, the performances of Alexis Vuillermoz (TotalEnergies) and Kévin Vauquelin (Team Arkéa Samsic) will also be interesting to follow on these roads throughout the three days of the Vuelta Asturias race.

Route: What are the stages of the Tour of Asturias?

Although the Tour of Asturias is not a major event on the UCI Europe Tour calendar, following the race will be worth more than just looking at it. Clearly, there will be no appetizer on this 65th edition. With only three stages to go, things will get off to a strong start right away.

The ascents will be linked for a total of 2,800 meters of altitude difference. The next day, the road will be just as hard. A little less on the last day, but that said, distrust will be required. It will therefore be necessary to be very consistent and not to miss seconds which could prove to be precious for the final victory.

Friday April 29 – Stage 1 – Oviedo / Pola de Lena (168.9 km)

From the first day of racing on the Vuelta Asturias, it is to be expected that a certain hierarchy will be well established on the road between the riders. Throughout the 168.9 kilometers to be covered and the approximately 2,800 meters of elevation gain, there will be six difficulties listed.

Starting with the climb of Robiedo (1.3 km at 10.6%) after only a few kilometers. Further on will follow two other climbs, those of Gargantada (4.6 km at 3.6%) and La Colladona (6.7 km at 6.7%), but they should not have too much influence. On the other hand, the sequence comprising La Cabana (3.4 km at 9.1%), Fresnedo (4.9 km at 5.1%) and Carabanzo (2.1 km at 9.3%) will have a completely different importance. Moreover, at the top of the last difficulty, there will be barely a little more than six kilometers to cover until the finish line.

Samedi 30 April – Stage 2 – Candas / Cangas del Narcea (202 km)

Compared to the day before, a little less elevation gain (about 2,000 meters) and fewer climbs listed, that said, it's a new day on the Tour of Asturias where differences can be made with more than 200 kilometers scheduled .

During the first three quarters of the stage, the road will be quite hilly and will include two climbs counting for the mountain classification: Aristebano (14.7 km at 3.7%) and Forcayu (4.7 km at 5.7 %). But the big piece will be located in the final with the climb of El Acebo (7.7 km at 8.2%) whose summit will be located less than twenty kilometers from the end. To then reach the finish, there will be almost only descent.

May 1 Sunday – Stage 3 – Cangas del Narcea / Oviedo (122 km)

To finish the Tour of Asturias, it is undoubtedly the most affordable stage to take part in. Shorter, with 122 kilometers, its difficulty is not very important. However, the general classification is still capable of changing.

After almost 110 first kilometers without any real ascent, that of Violeo (3.1 km at 9.2%) has something to change the situation. And allow the fittest runners to shine. Once the summit has been crossed, there will then be 10 kilometers left, with another uphill portion very close to the finish.

Tour of Asturias: How to watch live on TV?

There will be no tv broadcast, either on a free or paid channel, of the 65th edition of the Tour of Asturias. The best way to follow the news of the event will be to connect on its various social, but also and especially on TodayCycling .

Who will win the Tour of Asturias 2022?

For this 2.1 stage race that is the Vuelta Asturias, there are not many recognized names in the peloton to make the trip. Because of this, a few runners seem to be breaking away to fight for the final victory. In the lead, Simon Yates (Team BikeExchange – Jayco) and Ivan Ramiro Sosa (Movistar Team) leave with the favor of the forecasts. Frenchmen Pierre Latour and Alexis Vuillermoz , both from TotalEnergies, will try to gain the upper hand over the Briton and Colombian.

Bike – The prognosis of the editorial staff of Todaycycling

There are clearly tougher choices than this in trying to guess the next winner of the Tour of Asturias. Although he hasn't played in any competition for over a month, Simon Yates has all the assets to dominate the competition , with a course that can suit him perfectly.

The main favorites and underdogs

With stages, all more or less hilly, the final victory cannot escape a good climber. What naturally think of Simon Yates and Ivan Ramiro Sosa, who will have to assume this role of favorite.

Facing them, Pierre Latour, Alexis Vuillermoz or Lorenzo Fortunato (EOLO-Kometa) act as outsiders. And will try on the road to undermine the established order.

To a lesser extent, Kévin Vauquelin (Team Arkéa Samsic), Cristian Rodriguez (TotalEnergies), Damien Howson (Team BikeExchange – Jayco) and Ivan Garcia Cortina (Movistar Team) will also be present to shine in the general classification.
